The state government has announced Thursday as a public holiday in all regions where the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be held. The state election commission has ordered all twenty-nine civic bodies, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, thane, and Pune, to facilitate large voter turnout.

What’s closed today?

These offices and Institutions will remain closed today:

  • Government offices/semi-government offices
  • Corporations and boards
  • Public sector undertakings (PSUs)
  • Banks
  • Central government offices that are located within the BMC jurisdiction
  • Private offices based on individual organisational policies

These educational institutions will remain closed today:

  • All government and civic-run educational institutions
  • Private schools and colleges may suspend classes, if campuses are being used as voting stations.

Restrictions on alcohol services:

  • Four-day dry period will be observed from January 13 to 16 in the 29 municipal corporation areas. During this period, sale and consumption of alcohol is banned.
  • Liquor shops and bars will be shut down.

Other services to remain affected are:

  • Stock Market Holiday
  • Financial markets
  • Both the BSE and the NSE to observe a full trading holiday today. All segments, including commodities, derivatives, and electronic gold receipts, will remain suspended.

What’s open today?

These emergency and essential services will operate as normal on Thursday:

  • Hospitals, police, ambulances, and fire services
  • Public transport
  • Mumbai’s BEST buses, local trains, and other forms of public transport services will continue as usual.
