Maharashtra Transporters Strike: Trucks, autos, buses to go off roads from tonight over e-challans; Who is affected, here’s all you need to know

Transport unions launch indefinite strike across Maharashtra over alleged misuse of the e-challan system after talks with transport authorities fail.

Truckers, auto rickshaw operators, taxi drivers, and other public transport workers have announced an indefinite strike across Maharashtra today. The strike was initiated by a group of transport unions under the Maharashtra Transporters Action Committee (M TAC), which warned of a statewide shutdown of service, affecting several cities, including Pune and Mumbai.

The strike was announced over complaints about the e-challan system, stating that it is being misused for unfair penalties. This came after the talks between transport unions and transport commissioner Rajesh Narvekar on Wednesday yielded no result.

Key issues with the e-challan system

The Transport Union raised an issue over the misuse of power, which led to unfair fines and slow resolution of complaints. Furthermore, vehicle operators claim they face harassment from authorities and are forced to stop their vehicles for fines.

Who Will Be Affected?

If the strike goes as planned, it will affect the daily commuters in major metropolitan cities, namely Mumbai and Pune. Even the last-mile travel might be impacted if taxis and autorickshaws continue to remain off the road. Goods movement may also be impacted if trucks and tempos continue to remain off the road.

Key Demands of Protesters

The Transport Union is demanding changes in the current e-challan system. This will include the withdrawal of the rule that compels drivers to pay 50% of the fine prior to contesting it.

Moreover, they are also demanding that the authorities review the pending fines, reduce the toll booths and taxes, and form an independent body to handle grievances regarding traffic fines, permits, and seized vehicles.
