This wasn’t just a poor tour, it was an embarrassment. Pakistan hockey captain Shakeel Abbasi has publicly slammed the Pakistan Hockey Federation after what he described as a chaotic and humiliating tour of Australia and his words weren’t mild. They were angry, frustrated and long overdue.
“What result do you expect from us?”
Speaking to reporters at Lahore airport, the captain didn’t hold back. He said players had to wash dishes and clean the kitchen before heading out to play international matches. Let that sink in. Professional athletes, on national duty and Cleaning up before facing top-tier opposition.
“When players have to clean the kitchen and wash dishes before going to play a match, what result do you expect from us?” he asked. It wasn’t just about pride. It was about basic professionalism.
Accommodation chaos in Australia
The problems started the moment the team landed. They reportedly waited 13 to 14 hours at Sydney airport before catching a connecting flight to Canberra. Things got worse when they reached their hotel. There was no booking and no advance payment had been made.
The players were left waiting for hours and even roaming the streets before temporary accommodation was arranged. Ahead of their opening FIH Pro League match against Australia, the focus wasn’t on tactics or recovery. It was about finding a place to stay. Pakistan lost that game 2-3.
They went on to lose all their matches in the Australia leg, including games against Germany. Preparation matters, stability matters and clearly, neither was there.
Captain of the Pakistan hockey team, Imad Butt, speaking to the media at Lahore Airport, said:

“During our tour of Australia, after landing at Sydney Airport, we were left unattended for 13 hours like abandoned people. I and the other players recorded and shared videos. We even… pic.twitter.com/VhHOVvGco4
Funds released, but where did they go?
The situation became more serious after the Pakistan Sports Board confirmed it had given the federation over 10 million rupees to arrange proper hotel accommodation. That raises uncomfortable questions.
If the funds were released, why were players left stranded? PSB Director-General Noor us Sabah has said a detailed report is being prepared after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered an inquiry. Sharif is also the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hockey Federation. This isn’t just a sporting issue anymore. It’s administrative accountability.
Even Airbnb wasn’t sorted
The captain revealed that even the alternative Airbnb arrangement fell short. The team had bookings for 10 days but the tour required a 13-day stay. So midway through the tour, they had to shift to a cheaper residence. It’s hard to imagine elite athletes performing at their best under that kind of uncertainty.
Players warned not to speak
What makes this more troubling is that, according to Butt, players were warned of disciplinary action if they spoke to the media. That’s why his comments carry weight. He said he chose to speak because “enough was enough.” Sometimes, silence protects systems and sometimes, it protects dysfunction.
Call for a foreign coach and better management
Beyond the logistical mess, Butt also pointed to structural issues. He believes the team needs a foreign coach and stronger management if Pakistan hockey wants to move forward. He made it clear the talent is there. The combination of players is good but talent alone doesn’t win matches. Planning does, Support does and Professional management does.
Bigger than one tour
Pakistan hockey has a proud history. Olympic gold medals with World Cup triumphs. A legacy that once defined the sport. Stories like this, though, show how far the system has drifted. The inquiry will now determine what really went wrong. But one thing is certain, when your national players are worrying about accommodation and washing dishes before matches, something is fundamentally broken and fixing it can’t wait.
