India’s road to the title
India came into the tournament as one of the favourites, but their journey wasn’t completely smooth in the early stages.
Their campaign began with a hard-fought win against the United States, followed by another victory over Namibia. While both results kept India on track, the performances weren’t particularly dominant.
Things started to click when India faced Pakistan in Colombo. That match saw the team deliver a far more convincing display, securing qualification for the Super 8 stage.
India won all four of their group-stage matches, but their momentum took a hit in the Super 8s when they suffered a heavy defeat against South Africa.
Suddenly, the pressure was on. The team needed victories against Zimbabwe and West Indies, and they delivered when it mattered most, booking a spot in the semi-finals.
Wankhede thriller and a dominant final
The semi-final against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium turned into a high-scoring thriller. Both teams piled on runs, but India held their nerve in the closing stages to seal a 7-run victory.
That win set up a final showdown with New Zealand. And when it mattered the most, India produced their most complete performance of the tournament. Batting, bowling and fielding all clicked perfectly as they crushed New Zealand by 96 runs to lift the trophy.
A historic achievement
With this victory, India became the first team in history to win three T20 World Cups. Winning back-to-back titles only adds to the magnitude of the achievement. For captain Suryakumar Yadav and his team, the 2026 tournament will be remembered not just for the silverware, but for the historic milestone it represents for Indian cricket.
