Philippine authorities reported the presence of multiple Chinese vessels, including coast guard ships, militia boats, and a naval warship, allegedly attempting to drive away Filipino fishermen.

While the world is focused on conflicts in the Middle East, China has stepped up its actions in the South China Sea. For the first time, the Chinese Coast Guard announced a “clearing operation” through a live radio broadcast near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, which falls within the Philippines’ maritime zone.

According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Admiral Jay Tarriela, the incident was recorded during a maritime patrol flight.

What the Patrol Found

During the patrol, Philippine authorities spotted a strong Chinese presence in the area. This included six Chinese Coast Guard vessels, around 20 maritime militia boats, and one warship from the People’s Liberation Army Navy.

The Philippines claims these vessels were trying to scare away local fishing boats. A video of the incident shows Chinese ships allegedly harassing Filipino fishermen. During the operation, Chinese authorities broadcast a warning over radio, repeating “Security! Security! Security!” and announcing a restricted zone.

They marked four coordinates, forming a square area in the southern part of the shoal, and warned all vessels to leave the area between 11 am and 6 pm. The Philippines says this was an attempt to intimidate its fishermen.

Philippines’ Response

Between March 22 and 23, more than 20 Filipino fishing boats were reportedly harassed by Chinese Coast Guard speedboats. Similar incidents had happened earlier as well.

In response, the Philippine Coast Guard sent two ships and five patrol vessels to the area. These teams protected fishermen and supplied them with essential goods so they could continue fishing safely. Officials said these steps were taken to ensure the safety of local fishermen.

What is Scarborough Shoal?

Scarborough Shoal is a disputed reef in the South China Sea claimed by China, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Currently, it is under China’s control.

It is located about 220 km west of Luzon in the Philippines and over 800 km from China’s Hainan Island. The area is strategically and economically important, which is why multiple countries want control over it.

The waters around the shoal are rich in fish, making it an important spot for fishermen. It is also located near major shipping routes, adding to its global significance.
