Iran has appointed senior military figure Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new Secretary of its Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), replacing Ali Larijani. The move comes at a critical time for Tehran as tensions in West Asia remain high and the country faces ongoing military and political challenges.
Larijani was killed in recent strikes, creating a major gap in Iran’s top leadership structure. His death has led to a wider reshuffle among senior officials as the government works to reorganise its security and strategic leadership during the conflict.
Zolghadr, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), will now head one of the most powerful institutions in Iran responsible for shaping the country’s defence, nuclear, and foreign policy strategies.
Security Body at the Center of Decision-Making
The Supreme National Security Council plays a crucial role in Iran’s power structure. The body is responsible for coordinating the country’s military, intelligence, and diplomatic responses, especially during periods of crisis or war.
As secretary of the council, Zolghadr will oversee strategic discussions and help guide key decisions related to national security. The position is considered one of the most influential roles in Iran’s political system because it directly impacts how the country responds to regional and global tensions.
Hardline Shift in Leadership
Zolghadr’s appointment signals a stronger role for the Revolutionary Guards in Iran’s leadership. The IRGC has long been a powerful force in the country’s military and political system, and its influence appears to be growing further.
