In a world where ‘The Bloodline’ is the hottest ticket in town, the youngest member of the dynasty is choosing a different path. Ava, the 24-year-old daughter of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has officially called time on her WWE career, stepping down from her high-profile role as the General Manager of NXT.
The news broke over the weekend when Ava took to Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that last Tuesday’s episode of NXT was her final appearance. It’s a move that’s caught many off guard, especially considering she was recently offered a contract extension with a pay raise, a clear sign that WWE was more than happy with her work in the “Youngest GM in History” role.
The ‘Why’ behind the exit
Naturally, the rumor mill started spinning immediately. Some pointed to the recent release of her girlfriend, Tatyanna Dumas (part of the NXT group LFG), as a potential catalyst. However, veteran wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer has suggested the reason might be much simpler: she just didn’t want to do it anymore.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer noted there wasn’t some “compelling drama” or backstage blow-up. Instead, it seems Ava simply reached a personal turning point. “I’ve talked to and heard from several people, and the general thing was just she didn’t want to do it anymore,” Meltzer explained. He also hinted that she might transition into a role at her parents’ production studio, Seven Bucks, noting that she doesn’t have to grind on the road if her heart isn’t in it.
From Schism to GM
Ava’s journey in WWE was a bit of a whirlwind. She signed in 2020 as the first-ever fourth-generation superstar, carrying the massive weight of the Maivia-Johnson legacy on her shoulders. We first saw her on TV in 2022 as the mysterious, masked member of the heel faction Schism, before she transitioned into an authority figure role under the wing of Shawn Michaels.
Her tenure as GM was actually a hit with fans; she felt natural in the role and was even the one to unveil the NXT Women’s North American Championship. Her departure leaves a massive void in the NXT hierarchy, and with Tony D’Angelo currently running rogue and attacking talent, the brand is suddenly without a leader to keep the peace.
